How to Edit a PSD Flex Banner in Photoshop

By the TamilPSD design team Β· Updated 2 October 2026

A PSD flex banner is a Photoshop file in which every part of the design (background, photos, names, decorations) sits on its own layer. That is what makes it reusable: you change only the parts that are specific to your customer and keep the rest. This guide walks through the process we follow at our shop for every banner order, from opening the file to sending it to the printer.

1. Before you open the file

2. Understand the layer panel

Open the Layers panel (Window β†’ Layers or F7). Good templates group layers into folders such as Text, Photos, Background and Effects. Click the eye icon to hide a layer and see what it contains. Lock the background layers (the padlock icon) so you do not move them by mistake while editing the text.

Tip: hold Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) and click anything on the canvas to jump straight to the layer that contains it. If that does not work, enable Auto-Select: Layer in the Move tool options bar.

3. Change the text

  1. Select the Type tool (T) and click inside the existing text, or double-click the β€œT” thumbnail in the Layers panel to select all of it.
  2. Type the new name or wording. The font, colour and effects (stroke, shadow, gradient) are kept because they belong to the layer, not the letters.
  3. If the new text is longer, reduce the size in the Character panel instead of squeezing it with Free Transform, so the letters do not look stretched.
  4. Some titles in templates are already converted to images (rasterised) or are shapes. These cannot be edited with the Type tool; hide them and add a new text layer with a similar style instead.

If Photoshop shows a yellow warning triangle on a text layer, the font used in the template is not installed on your computer. See our guide on fonts for Tamil designs for how to replace or install it without breaking the layout.

4. Replace the photos

Most banner photos sit inside a frame or shape using a clipping mask. Place your photo directly above the placeholder layer, then right-click it and choose Create Clipping Mask (or press Alt/Option and click between the two layers). The photo now shows only inside the frame and you can move and scale it freely. Our separate guide on replacing photos in a PSD template covers smart objects and cut-outs in more detail.

5. Adjust colours carefully

To match a party colour, a wedding theme or a shop's brand, use adjustment layers rather than painting over the design. A Hue/Saturation or Color Balance adjustment layer, clipped to the background group, changes the colour without destroying the original. If you do not like the result you simply delete the adjustment layer.

6. Check before you export

7. Save for the printer

Always keep the layered PSD for future corrections. For printing, save a flattened copy: File β†’ Save a Copy as JPEG (quality 10–12) or TIFF, or as PDF if your printer asks for it. A flattened file avoids missing fonts and effects at the printer's end. For WhatsApp approval, export a small JPG (File β†’ Export β†’ Export As, around 1600 px wide). The guide on exporting for print and WhatsApp lists the exact settings we use.
